In an effort to help move democracy forward, the KBRP News Department is providing extensive coverage of the 2012 City of Bisbee elections for City Council and Mayor. This page will be a depository for all information about the local elections in Bisbee and Cochise County. KBRP Candidate Interviews - Full Audio

Beginning August 13th and running up to election day, August 28th, KBRP will be offering each candidate for city office an opportunity to sit down for an interview. Below is the first 5 interviews from the week of August 13th. Please check back each day for additional information and interviews as part of KBRP's coverage of the 2012 elections.

Ward 3 Write-In Candidate Marie Minor

Marie Minor is running as a write-in candidate for Ward 3 after some confusion at the City Clerk's office with the validation of her petition for candidacy. Marie is the only candidate running as a write-in, so KBRP decided to host our first interview with her.

Mayoral Candidate Ron Oertle

Ron Oertle has held the office of Mayor for two terms prior to Jack Porter and is attempting for a third this year. Ron is one of three mayoral candidates that will need to receive a majority of votes in the August 28th election to prevent a run-off in November.

Mayoral Candidate Bennie Scott

Bennie Scott currently serves Ward 3 as a City Council representative, but is running for Mayor during this election cycle. Bennie was born and raised here and worked both at the mines and as a City of Bisbee police officer. Bennie is one of three mayoral candidates that will need to receive a majority of votes in the August 28th election to prevent a run-off in November.

Mayoral Candidate Adriana Zavala Badal

Adriana is a newcomer to Bisbee politics, but has an extensive political background that includes policy and lobbying work. She has has been actively involved with business and non-profit groups since her arrival back in Bisbee a number of years ago. Adriana is one of three mayoral candidates that will need to receive a majority of votes in the August 28th election to prevent a run-off in November.

Ward 1 Candidate Ken Budge

Current Ward 1 City council representative Ken Budge is running for re-election this year. Ken is running to fill the two years left on the seat vacated by Boyd Nichol. Ken spent his career as a public safety official and has extensive legislative experience. Ken is running unopposed for this seat.

Ward 1 Candidate Rob Page

Council Member Rob Page was appointed earlier this year to fill the remaining time on Boyd Nichol's seat until the primary election. During this time, Rob has been heavily involved in the city budgeting process. Rob is running against Gene Conners for a full four year term.

Ward 1 Candidate Gene Conners

Ward 1 City Council Candidate Gene Conners expressed an interest in the Ward 1 seat back in February during the appointment process. Having spent time on various boards and commissions, Gene decided to throw his hat into the ring for a full 4 year term. Gene's bid is being contested by current City Council member Rob Page.

Ward 2 Candidate David Smith

David Smith is running to fill a 4-year seat on the City Council, which is currently held by Luche Giacomino. Dave has an extensive public service background and currently sits on the City of Bisbee Charter Review Commission. David has also operated an international fire investigation business for many years, which includes work and contracts with municipalities.

Ward 3 Candidate Shirley Doughty

Shirley Doughty is running to fill the Ward 3 seat on the City Council currently ocuppied by Bennie Scott. Shirley has been a long-term resident of Bisbee and currently sits on the Charter Review Commission as the Secretary. While officially unopposed, Shirley is facing write-in candidate Marie Minor for this Ward 3 seat.

Ward 2 Candidate Luche Giacomino

Luche Giacomino is running for reelection in Ward 2 for the seat she has occupied for 3 terms. Luche is a life-time resident of Bisbee and is active in community. Luche also serves on the Bisbee Unified School District Governing Board. She is facing opposition in Ward 2 from candidate Dave Smith.

A Better Bisbee - Better Together Candidate Forum

On August 6th, KBRP was invited by the business advoacy group 'A Better Bisbee' to assist in running sound for a forum to include all candidates for city office.  KBRP assisted Prism Communications in providing coverage of this event and was the first entity to make the audio available to the public not in attendance.  The forum took place at the Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee and welcomed more the 150 people as audience members.  Christina Plascencia from 55 Main Gallery and Nick Night from Warm Hands Theraputics served as moderators.  If you have any questions about this audio, please contact our Station Director Ryan Bruce at 520-227-6547 or by email at ryan@kbrp.org

2012 Mayoral Candidates Forum - 34 minutes

When current mayor Jack Porter steps down in December, Adriana Zavala Badal, Ron Oertle, or Bennie Scott will take his seat as the new Bisbee mayor. In this recording, the three Bisbee mayoral candidates answer questions from A Better Bisbee Moderators Nick Night and Christina Plascencia during this 35 minute forum.

2012 Ward One Candidates Forum - 26 minutes

There are two seats up in Ward 1 this year -- One is a full term of four years and the other is to fill out the 2 years remaining on Boyd Nichol's term.  The four year seat has two candidates running for election - Gene Conners and Rob Page.  The two year seat is not contested with current Council member Ken Budge vying for the remaining two year term.  In this footage, the candidates field a slate of questions from A Better Bisbee moderators Nick Night and Christina Plascencia over 26 minutes.

2012 Ward Two Candidates Forum - 10 minutes

In Ward 2, Luche Giacomino is up for reelection and her seat is contested by candidate Dave Smith.  Council member Giacomino was unavailable on Monday evening for undisclosed reasons, but candidate Dave Smith answered a round of questions from Nick and Christina for approximately 10 minutes.

2012 Ward Three Candidates Forum - 17 minutes

Since Bennie Scott is running as a mayoral candidate, it leaves his current Ward 3 seat up for grabs.  Candidate Shirley Doughty is running unopposed for this seat, but Marie Minor has become an official write-in candidate.  During this segment, Shirley and Marie separately answer questions from A Better Bisbee moderators Nick and Christina.

Public Q& A from Candidates Forum - 57 minutes

Throughout the evening, the public was given an opportunity to write and submit questions.  At the conclusion of the moderated questions, Nick and Christina took these questions and asked all 9 candidates to respond for the time remaining.
