2011 Monument Wildfire - Sound and Press Archive

As of Sunday afternoon, June 12th, what has been named the Monument Wild Fire is burning in the Coronado National Memorial and directly north and east of that area.  As of Sunday, June 19th the fire has already damaged over 20000 acres of land.  KBRP will be posting all of the information we have available for our listeners on this page, so please keep checking back frequently or tuning in on 96.1 FM or online at KBRP RADIO dot COM.

Animal Rescue Information:

Anyone needing assistance with animal evacuations can call either 520-559-2224 or 520-234-7037.

If you have lost or are missing animals in Cochise County because of the fire call 520-432-9500.

New Frontier Animal Clinic has volunteered to help with animals due to the Monument Fire - Katherine Honda 520-234-5145. Firefighters and Boarder Patrol are taking small animals that have been rescued to this location, call to see if your animal is there.

Free boarding for horses at Sierra Vista Riding Club, call 520-678-0360.

• As of Friday afternoon (6/17/2011), more than 240 evacuated animals — mostly horses with a smattering of alpacas and goats — were being housed at the riding club, with more arrivals all the time.

• Anyone who needs help hauling horses or who needs a place to leave horses can call Sierra Vista Riding Club members Dawn Dye at (520) 234-5717 or Cyndi McMillian-McGee at (520) 255-3489.

People who have space to board horses or have horse panels they can loan for evacuees are asked to call Ann Jost, president and founder of Care for the Horses, at (520) 378-0896. Hay, feed, and monetary donations also are being accepted for rescue efforts.

Brian Ortel 4755 W Morin Road, McNeal, AZ 520-364-4929 has 90 acres that he has offered for horses being evacuated. You need to bring whatever supplies you need.

Animal Watchers - Whetstone 520-456-9020 - Has 16 runs for Dogs and 25 cat capacity - will take overflow from Evacuation.

Sierra Animal Hospital 458-8656 has minimal housing for small and medium dogs (15 max) - ambulance available for transport (fees imposed)

Judy Marcheski 520-508-4706 Call First! - can take in one or two people with pets. People must stay with their pets.

4 Paws Inn at 4066 E. Monsanto Dr. in Sierra Vista is offering to board household pets of affected victims for free. Contact Stephanie Clark at 520-378-7176 for more information.

• The 4 Paws Inn continues to offer free shelter for pets. They are opening an empty building as of Friday afternoon and will have an additional 2,200 sq. ft. of space for your animal.

• They also need portable kennels and animal carriers desperately. There are also still volunteer opportunities.

Horse’n Around, another equine rescue organization, is willing to help people who need assistance with displaced horses. Call Steve Boice at (520) 907-8765 or Theresa Warrell at (520) 266-0236.

Robertson Horse Sales, located at 714 N. Madison St. in Benson, has room for 50 horses. Horse owners are requested to bring their own hay and feed. The number is (520) 586-9230. Leave a message and Robertson will return the call.

The B Troop 4th United States Cavalry at Fort Huachuca is working to help get large animals safely from the area near the Monument Fire. Officials with the group say people should call 520-538-2178. The Calvary will bring trailers to help them move horses and other large animals. Help Is Waiting for your Large Animals at the Sierra Vista Mall - Please call 520-378-0896 for immediate assistance.

• A large group was assembled at the south east edge of the mall shortly before lunch. There were ten empty horse trailers, varying in capacity from the ability to transport two to seven horses, or other large animals. Claire Germano, spokesperson for “Care for the Horses” indicated this is an all volunteer group, ready to help anyone with any transportation related fire need. Flint Barney, one of several volunteers waiting to assist you, drove 35 miles from his home in Pomerene, AZ to help. He has a capacity for seven large animals. Fred related, “It is what I can do to help.”
